jazz & indictments [29 Oct 2005|03:53pm]
[ mood | mellow ]

the day before the coolest, most unflappable man in the media these days, Mr. Pat Fitzgerald, handed down a long over-due slap on the republicans behind; some friends & I saw the best jazz band I've seen in ages. granted I don't seek out much but these mid-westerners truly shred. THE BAD PLUS is their name & if I was more tech savvy you'd be able to click their name & hear something of theirs. haven't heard their records yet but live they had an ability to shift from a melodic, extremely romantic piece to total free form in a 32nd note. the fact that there's no singing really isn't that bad, just kidding.

a new diet, new family resolve, some nighttime confinement & huge hope has given a our beloved Spot another lease on life. we all hope we're doing the right thing since he still wanders around aimlessly w/ his poor old, muddled, coonhound brain. (see below). now all we need is a couple of white house aid indictments. fingers crossed. GO TEAM!!

IN HONOR OF SPOT [24 Oct 2005|12:46pm]
[ mood | crushed ]

tomorrow will be a sad, sad day. it's the first time I've ever called the vet to make this kind of appointment.

there ought to be a beach where dogs go
where they see their other dog friends &
people who were nice to them
there ought to be a cove
where the waves aren't too high
where they can swim out to try to catch seagulls
& run for a mile trying to catch the others on the shore

there ought to be a field of snow
that isn't too deep
& their black fur is silhouetted like a shadow
where they can chase around in circles
'cause they don't quite know what else to do w/ themselves
this is dog's version of snow angels

there ought to be a backseat with the window wide open
where the breeze is warm with a hundred mysterious smells
where their ears sail outwards
& you're positive that they're smiling

there ought to be a dusty, hot trail w/ horses to run w/
& squirrels to bark at
where there's a shallow, wide river w/ shore birds to chase
a river you can lay right down in
& take a long, cool drink of water

there comes a rider [22 Oct 2005|10:54am]
[ mood | dirty ]

there's a big brown field
where the grass is all burned
it would cut yr feet
even if you walked w/ little, tiny, baby steps

we are crows
sitting on two posts
waiting for something to die
glad to still be alive
we're just talking
as crows often do
there's no fighting
we're just talking
but there's something
deeply suggestive beneath
all this talking

on the horizon
there comes a rider,
maybe our ticket home,
riding this way
he looks kind of skinny
but we don't care
we live by making do

now that big brown field's
been burned black
& a big black cloud hangs above
that rider is gone
carcasses everywhere
& we're still talking as we eat

A few day ago Calexico & Iron & Wine played the Wiltern Thtr/LA. I don't believe in competition when it comes to music, poetry & art but; Calexico completely out classed Senor Iron&wine. They were smarter, stronger heavier, lighter more depth & variety & even more soulful. Along w/ beautiful melodies; being soulful seemed to Mr I&W's strongest suit. I'm equally "sort of familiar" w/ both of their CDs but Iron & Wine seemed to get rather same-y s the night went on. please correct me if I'm wrong. He did two very nice covers during the Calexico/I&W joint set. "All Tomorrow's Parties" by VU & "You Were Always On My Mind", a song w/ a truly sweet sentiment that they avoided letting get too schmaltzy.
But again the night belonged to Calexico. Joey B's voice has become a true mirror & shining beacon of the wild & lonesome sound that has made them famous. He's also become extremely cool in an honest & unpretentious way. I admit I was a little baffled when I heard a young woman in back of me say that Sam (Mr. I&W) "was SO cute". he's got that big giant beard, doesn't that exclude him from being "cute"? again correct me if I'm wrong.

space between [19 Oct 2005|04:17pm]
[ mood | nostalgic ]

there's an empty bed
who reaches out it's arm
& grasps onto my leg
falling through open space
it pulls me so far down to you
sheets in tatters
stained blue ticking
swinging back & forth
like a feather ball & chain
"feel that acceleration?"
'not really'
it feels like yr arms around me

there's a tiny voice
in the back of my head
reminding me
of every sweet & beautiful thing
you have ever said

Katrina Hymnal Benefit was a musical success but not NEARLY enough people. why is LA so lame when it comes to supporting it's "so called" home town artists?
Victoria Wms. gave one of thee most inspiring performances I've ever seen. she IS the John Coltrane of folk music. Once again it appears that she is inventing music from scratch w/ every song she sings. Joe Henry walked the line between smoothest & grooviest of sounds & an edge that threatened to brake loose at any moment. The loudest srting quartet, The Section, played Radiohead & an incredible version of Jeff Buckley's "In the Fire" [I'M SO DUMB IT'S THE SONG "GRACE"]( I know that's not the title but . . .) see the documentary "Amazing Grace". The Section also backed Sam Phillips to beautifully heart-braking effect. Grant-Lee Phillips gets all the credit in the world for his "make you wanna jump" performance & organizing all the other stuff around the show. How cool is he when he sings that "woo-hoo"? Jakob Dylan showed how particularlly moving he can be as a solo performer w/ a little help from Jon Brion & Doe sang harmony on "one Headlight". good night, you shoulda been there.

doubtful that anyone who would read this might need to know:
the Katrina Benefit that was scheduled last night, 10/16, in LA @ the El Rey Theater has been postponed 'til TONIGHT ! !

the power went out last night & we (Grant-Lee, Jon Brion etc.) resorted to singing a couple of song on the street. people were grateful, we had fun but it was too short. we're pretty sure ALL of the same performers, Jakob Dylan, Joe henry, Victoria Wms et. al, will be there AGAIN TONIGHT.

someone take pictures so they can be posted

dark movie theater
hands not held
college w/out an english major
fog & then none
an arm draped over the young girl's shoulder
sun on the middle of yr back
that's where I'd place my hand
if there's no one watching

the Knitters played SF @ the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass fest & it's a good thing we only had an hour to play 'cause after seeing that inspirational "Jeff Buckley Amazing Grace" film the night before; I wanted to smash my guitar into splinters after Born to be Wild 'cause we were so worked up over the audience, the trees, the rock & whew!, etc. Patti Griffin was thee best singer there. Hazel Dickens was too mountain for the 17 yr old Veronica. & Los Super Sevens flew by the seat of their pants but showed what true professionals can do. Ruben Ramos may have to take the title "Silver Fox" away from Charlie Rich, if that sort of thing can be done. wish I had pictures but I'm working on that for the future.
